Owning a home is a dream for millions of Indians, but rising property prices make it difficult for lower and middle-income groups to afford one. To bridge this gap, the Government of India launched the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U), a flagship initiative aimed at providing affordable housing for urban residents. The scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and targets families from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Low-Income Groups (LIG), and Middle-Income Groups (MIG). The goal of PMAY-U is to ensure that every eligible urban household has a pucca house with basic amenities.
Objective of the Scheme
PMAY-U was introduced to tackle the housing shortage in urban areas, particularly for slum dwellers and economically weaker sections. The scheme promotes affordable housing, sustainable urban development, and financial assistance through interest subsidies on home loans. It operates under the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS), making homeownership easier by reducing the financial burden on buyers.
